HRD Ministry and UGC Snatch Deemed University Status from 44 Institutions

HRD Ministry submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court yesterday (Jan 18 2010) saying that 44 deemed universities should be de-recognised and lose their Deemed University Status.

The expert committee on deemed universities recommended that out of a total of 126 Deemed Universities, 38 universities were found OK, 44 others have been given three years to improve their functioning and the remaining 44 have been found to be ineligible.

In last few years many institutes were granted the status of “deemed university” enabling them to manage their own affairs. However many of these universities were below standard and worked like money minting machines. The career of thousands of students studying in these institutes will depend of Supreme Court’s decision on their fate. It seems that these students will appear for exams via the parent universities of these “deemed universities”.
